Graduate students

We are accepting graduate student applications this application cycle (Fall 2025) through the graduate program of the Brain, Behaviour, and Cognitive Sciences (BBCS) area in York University’s Psychology Department.

Competitive applicants will have previous research experience in psychology, (cognitive) neuroscience, or a related discipline, and a shared interest in the lab’s research questions.

You can find more information on how to apply to the Psychology graduate program here. Please create an account and start your application before December 1! You will have until December 15 to upload your documents.

When you write your statement of purpose, please include your research interests and why you are interested in pursuing a graduate degree? What are you hoping to get out of it? In addition, provide an overview of your previous research-related experiences and the skills you gained. Lastly, please let us know why you consider the Kupers lab and York University’s Brain, Behaviour, and Cognitive Sciences area in the Psychology Department! Why you would be a good fit for the lab?

The Psychology graduate program has a Master’s component (2 years) and a PhD component (4-5 years). There are far fewer PhD positions than MSc positions, and those limited number of PhD positions are reserved for the students in master’s program that want to advance to the PhD program. If you are interested in pursuing a PhD degree, I highly recommend you apply to the Master’s program.
What if I already have a master’s degree? York University requires a Master’s in Psychology as a prerequisite to entering the PhD program. If you have a Master’s in Psychology, I still recommend you go through the MSc program, as it guarantees a spot in the PhD program.

Unfortunately, the Psychology Department only offers funded positions to those who have Canadian citizenship or Canadian permanent residency. International applicants will not be funded and need to show proof of external funds or ability to self-fund for the entire duration of the program.
